During the period the appearance on the scene of a mullato called Mr. Hutton changed the dynamics of cotton Cultivation.

Cotton cleaning machines were introduced into households apparently through Mr. Hutton.
This helped in adding value to the locally produced cotton and made it a real income generating activity.

Mr. Hutton became the main medium through whom cotton from Peki was sold at the coast. In return he sold rum and other luxury goods to Peki.

The cotton trade flourished in 1864 bringing monetary returns. Sadly the crop and its attendant profitability suffered a serious dip when the Europeans started importing cotton thread . The Ashanti War which affected every other activity in Peki was the final nail in the coffin of cotton trade and what have hitherto being a lucrative flourishing business.
